Oktoberfest at The Wharf
Saturday, October 3, 2026; festivities begin at 2 p.m.
Watch the dachshund dash, hear polka and browse the waterfront festivities. Dog-race registration is sold out, but that does not mean the public celebration is closed to spectators.
DC Coffee Festival
October 3–4, 2026; ticketed sessions; Saturday afternoon session 1:30–4:30 p.m.
Taste coffees and meet roasters at Dock 5. Book the date and session you actually want: the cheaper Saturday early-bird tier was sold out when checked, while a $37.05 afternoon general-admission ticket was selectable.
October 5 to 11: a weekday market, art after dark and outdoor opera
The gallery lottery has closed, but limited walk-up passes are offered. Georgetown Canal Day and Opera Outside are free.
Capital Harvest on the Plaza
Wednesdays, October 7, 14, 21 and 28, 2026; 10 a.m.–2 p.m.
Make this a weekday lunch stop downtown. The October schedule has four Wednesday markets; the first and third Wednesdays also coincide with Capital Arts Collective. Federal Triangle is the nearby Metro stop.
National Gallery Nights: Monster Mash
Thursday, October 8, 2026; 6–9 p.m.
Oh He Dead plays the Halloween-themed evening, with art activities inside the East Building. The advance lottery has closed. If you did not enter, the gallery lists a limited walk-up option at the East Building entrance; admission is not guaranteed.
Opera Outside at Union Market
Friday, October 9, 2026; 5:30 p.m.
Washington Concert Opera brings singers and piano outdoors for a mix of opera and musical theater. It is a casual concert: stop by for the music and get dinner in the market afterward. Recheck the organizer for weather updates.
Georgetown Canal Day
Sunday, October 11, 2026; 11 a.m.–3 p.m.
Georgetown Heritage celebrates the canal with a free afternoon in the Mule Yard and onboard the boat. Follow the current RSVP page for the activity schedule rather than assuming the regular paid boat-tour timetable applies.
Opera Outside at Dupont Circle
Sunday, October 11, 2026; 1 p.m.
The second October Opera Outside performance takes place in Dupont Circle Park. This is a separate venue and start time from Friday’s Union Market concert. All ages are welcome.
October 12 to 18: Turkish food and performances on the avenue
Sunday’s Turkish Festival is a free-entry street festival. The Wednesday market also continues downtown.
24th Annual DC Turkish Festival

Pennsylvania Avenue fills with Turkish food, cultural performances and a marketplace. It is one of the month’s easy free-entry festival plans, with enough food stalls to build lunch into the visit.
October 19 to 31: an Asian food festival in Navy Yard
Asia in a Bite has two days of free timed RSVPs. For Wednesday lunch, Capital Harvest continues October 21 and 28.

50th Annual Fairfax Fall Festival

The city’s 50th fall festival brings vendors and entertainment into Old Town. Admission is free, but budget separately for rides and lunch. The organizer says the event runs rain or shine.
Air & Scare at the Udvar-Hazy Center
Saturday, October 24, 2026; 10 a.m.–3 p.m.
The Smithsonian’s aviation Halloween event offers indoor activities without a ticket and outdoor activities with a timed reservation. Outdoor tickets are scheduled to open October 1 at 7 p.m. Eastern; check availability before promising the kids an outdoor slot.
