Orange Pocket opens Saturday, September 19, 2026 at noon at Rio Lakefront in Gaithersburg, at 30 Grand Corner Avenue in the space that was a Pier 1 Imports and then a seasonal Spirit Halloween. It is a Japanese and Korean pop culture store: blind boxes, plushies, anime figures, gashapon capsule machines, a row of claw machines, Japanese snacks and drinks, Korean and Japanese beauty, stationery, pet goods and kitchen odds and ends like bowls and chopsticks.
The company runs four stores in Texas, and its locations page lists Gaithersburg as the only one outside that state, so this is Orange Pocket’s first East Coast store. DC Spot walked the floor on September 12, a week before the doors open. The shelves were stocked, the machines were lit and the staff were still unboxing. Orange Pocket locations.

Doors open at noon on Saturday, September 19. Store staff told DC Spot the giveaways below are for opening day only and run while supplies last, so the line that forms before noon is the line that gets them.
What is inside Orange Pocket
The middle of the store is tables of blind boxes, the sealed mystery figures that have turned collecting into a sport. On the preview visit the tables held Sonny Angel, including a Halloween edition, Sanrio characters, a display for The Monsters, the Pop Mart line behind Labubu, plus Moetch, Finsm and a few smaller series. Blind boxes run $12 to $29. Shelves along the walls hold larger figures, plush and the kind of desk-sized collectibles you did not know you needed until you saw them.
Pokemon gets its own corner: plush in several sizes and trading cards. There are Kirby and Snoopy sheet masks in the beauty section, maneki-neko lucky cats stacked in a pyramid, pop-up greeting cards, stationery, pet toys, and a home goods section with bowls, chopsticks and tea cups. The store’s own line is that it is “a small space packed with big finds,” though at about 9,100 square feet, roughly the old Pier 1 footprint, it is not small.
Claw machines and a gashapon wall
One wall of the store is an arcade. A row of lit claw machines runs down it, each stocked with a single plush line, and the pricing is simple: tokens are $10 for five, one token per play, and store staff say the fifth try on the same machine is a guaranteed win. That rule changes the math on the usual claw-machine heartbreak.
Beside them is a wall of Bandai gashapon, the Japanese capsule-toy machines where you turn a crank and get a small figure, keychain or charm in a plastic egg. The store had not set a per-spin price on the preview visit, so check the machines.
Snacks, drinks and beauty
The snack aisle is the part of the store that will pull in people who have never bought a blind box: Japanese Kit Kat flavors, Pocky, butter sable cookies, fruit gummies, Calbee and Lay’s flavors that never make it to American shelves, and a drink case with Ramune, canned coffee, Japanese Coke and Fanta flavors and peach and grape sodas.
The beauty section runs Japanese and Korean brands, with a CANMAKE counter, Judydoll, sheet masks and skincare. It sits at the front of the store, which is a tell about who the store expects to walk in first.

Where it is, and where to park
Orange Pocket is at 30 Grand Corner Avenue in Rio Lakefront, the lake-side shopping center just off I-270 at I-370 in Gaithersburg. Rio’s store page says the best way in is the entrance near Kohl’s. The space was a Pier 1 Imports for years and a Spirit Halloween in the fall seasons after Pier 1 closed.
Parking at Rio is free. There are two garages and several surface lots; the garage outside the AMC theater fills first on busy days, and the lots beside and behind Target and the big lot off Washingtonian Boulevard are the easier bets. About Orange Pocket
Orange Pocket started in Texas and has four open stores there: Katy, Houston’s Bellaire Boulevard, The Woodlands and Austin, with a fifth coming to Baybrook Mall in Friendswood.
